COMS 220-002 Assignment: Art

What is art?

Emotion in a painting? A perfectly lifelike sculpture? A masterfully conducted symphony? Perhaps visual, audible, tangible, none or all. Can the essence of art really be attained by human ingenuity?

I can fairly easily define what is not art; what, in my opinion, probably should not merit museum display status. This sculpture falls nicely into that category, as do monocolor canvases and random convolutions of metal displayed on many a public building's lawn.

To completely define what art is, however, proves more difficult. Thirteen years of taking art classes, studying different artists and their unique styles, and exploring various mediums (such as pen and ink, photography and graphite) have only served to broaden the possibility of answers I can consider.

Art exists as a common thread of human society, a bridge between classes and a merger of environments.

In Emil Robinson's succinctly stated opinion, "Art is life; life is art."

This video is somewhat long but is an interesting application of the great art given to us by the masters:

While Wikipedia is a ready source for a lengthy discussion of art and its origination, I would contend that simply put, art is a reflection of God's creative glory back to Him.
